Sizing an LED wall

An LED wall is a grid of cabinets, and everything follows from the cabinet: its size in millimetres, its pixel pitch, and therefore its pixels. The three ways to size a wall are the three ways people ask for one. A count of cabinets, when the product is chosen, with the ratio locked so the rows follow the columns. An opening, when the wall has to fit a site. A resolution, when the content is fixed, which is how fine pitch is bought today: the 600 × 337.5 mm cabinet exists so that whole numbers of them make exactly Full HD, 4K or 8K.

Pitch decides distance and price. The practical rule is a metre of comfortable viewing per millimetre of pitch; the optical limit, where the eye can no longer separate pixels, is about 3.4 times that. Buy the coarsest pitch the closest viewer allows, because the cost per square metre rises steeply as the pitch falls. Questions

How is the resolution of an LED wall calculated?
Each cabinet has a fixed number of pixels: its width divided by the pixel pitch, and its height divided by the pitch. Multiply by the cabinets across and down and you have the wall. A 600 × 337.5 mm cabinet at 1.25 mm is 480 × 270 pixels, so eight across and eight high is 3840 × 2160, exactly 4K.
How does the aspect ratio lock work?
With a ratio locked, you set the cabinets across and the calculator picks the number of rows that lands nearest that ratio for your cabinet size, the way an installer does. The readout still shows the true ratio the whole cabinets make, and how far it sits from the one you locked. Portrait flips the ratio, so 16:9 becomes 9:16.
Why do fine-pitch cabinets have odd pitches like 1.5625 mm?
Because they are designed backwards from the resolution. A 600 mm cabinet at 1.5625 mm is 384 pixels wide, and ten of them make 3840. The pitch is chosen so a whole number of cabinets tiles exactly to Full HD, 4K or 8K.
Are the weight and power figures real?
For the typical cabinets, they are typical for each class of product, not any one manufacturer's data sheet. For your own cabinet they are left out, because the calculator does not know them. Confirm with the supplier's published figures before sizing a structure or a supply.
Which content resolution should I prepare?
The wall's native resolution, shown at the top of the results. Content made at that size plays pixel for pixel; content made at a common video size is scaled by the processor, which is fine for video and soft for small text.
