LG webOS Player Setup

Run easyCMS digital signage directly on LG webOS commercial displays, no external player box needed. Installation, CMS connection and authorisation.

LG’s commercial signage displays run webOS and can host the easyCMS player directly on the screen’s built-in System-on-Chip, no external media player, no extra cables, one less device to power and maintain. This guide covers getting the player onto the panel and connected to your CMS.

Before you start

  • Commercial models only. The player runs on LG’s commercial webOS signage line, not on consumer LG TVs. Support varies by webOS version and model series, and LG publishes recommended firmware per model, if in doubt, contact us at info@myeasycms.com with your model number before purchasing panels, and update the display’s firmware to the recommended version first.
  • Connect the display to your network (wired Ethernet recommended) and set the correct time and timezone in the display’s settings.
  • Have your CMS address (https://app.myeasycms.com) and CMS key to hand.

Opening the Server Settings menu

Installation happens through the display’s service menu, reached slightly differently depending on webOS version, typically by holding the Settings button on the remote until a prompt appears, or via the settings menu path to the SI Server Setting screen. Consult the panel’s manual for the exact route on your model.

Installation method 1: remote (network) install

  1. In the Server Settings screen, set the application launch mode to local application with a remote upgrade source.
  2. Set the application type to IPK and enter the download URL for the easyCMS webOS player package.
  3. Confirm, and let the display fetch and install the package.
  4. Restart the display; the player launches automatically.

Installation method 2: USB install

  1. Download the webOS player package (an .ipk file) on a computer.
  2. Rename it to the exact filename required by LG’s loader (com.lg.app.signage.ipk), the display will not detect it under any other name.
  3. Copy it into an application folder in the root of a FAT32 USB stick.
  4. Insert the stick into the display, set the upgrade source to USB in Server Settings, and confirm the install.
  5. Remove the stick and restart the display.

Connecting to the CMS

After restart the player shows its connect screen:

  1. Enter the CMS address, the full URL including https://.
  2. Enter the CMS key.
  3. Save; the display registers itself with your CMS. Newer player versions can alternatively show a short activation code that you enter in the CMS under “add display with code”, which avoids typing URLs with a TV remote.

Then log in to the CMS, open Displays, and authorise the new display from its row menu. Authorisation assigns one of your display licences; the player licence is applied automatically once the display is authorised. Without authorisation (or with an expired trial licence) the panel will not receive scheduled content.

Tips for webOS operation

  • Manage settings centrally with a webOS display settings profile in the CMS, orientation, operating hours and check-in interval, rather than walking to each screen.
  • For portrait installations, set the rotation and schedule portrait layouts designed at the matching resolution.
  • To check status on site, the player’s status window can be opened from the remote control (on LG panels this is bound to a colour button); it shows connection state, downloads and errors.
  • Keep firmware at the recommended version, many webOS quirks are fixed by a firmware update.

SoC playback is impressively capable, but a panel’s processor is more modest than a dedicated player, very heavy layouts with multiple simultaneous videos may run more smoothly on an Android or Windows player feeding the screen via HDMI.
